Garden design
A well-designed garden isn’t just beautiful to look at: it’s a space you live in every day, one that grows with your home and needs the right care over time. Cesarino Giardini handles the design and landscaping of gardens and green spaces for luxury villas, masserie, hotels and holiday accommodation, businesses and private clients: from the first site visit to the very last plant in the ground.
We start from how you want to use your outdoor space and turn it into a concrete plan, with plant choices suited to the Mediterranean climate, the soil and the time you can devote to maintenance.
An outdoor space that doesn’t reflect you
It happens a lot: a garden that grew without a plan, plants chosen on impulse that struggle with the heat or take over everything after the first summer, windswept corners where nothing takes root, a lawn that scorches in August and wears bare exactly where people walk. Or a new house with bare ground and the feeling of not knowing where to start.
The risk is spending time and money on unconnected jobs that never add up to a harmonious result and that, if anything, increase the maintenance work over the years.
A tailored design, delivered by a single team
We study sun exposure, prevailing winds such as the scirocco and the maestrale, soil type, drainage, views and paths, then design the garden around your habits: an outdoor dining area, a corner for the children, a vegetable patch, a flowering border that changes colour with the seasons. Every choice is made to last: plants suited to the setting, able to cope with long, dry summers and, on the coast, salt spray, hard-wearing materials, and systems planned in from the start.
The advantage of choosing us is that design and installation stay in the same hands. Whoever designs the garden also coordinates the work on site: no passing the buck between suppliers, clearer timescales and a single point of contact for every question.
Gardens for outdoor living
Many of the gardens we look after are built around a pool, among olive trees, dry-stone walls and trulli. We design them for the Puglia summer: soft lawn to walk on barefoot, beds of agaves, lavender and ornamental grasses along the stone edges, shade where it’s needed.
The service, item by item.
Site visit and survey
Measuring the area, analysing sun exposure, slopes, existing trees and problem spots such as waterlogging or shady areas.
Concept and site plan
A design proposal showing the layout of lawn, flower beds, paths and seating areas, to discuss and refine together.
Plant selection
Plants chosen for climate, soil and level of care: olive and citrus trees, evergreens such as pittosporum, bay and mastic, flowering shrubs such as oleander and crape myrtle, and aromatic herbs such as lavender and rosemary.
Ground preparation
Levelling, stone clearing where the bedrock breaks through, and added topsoil and organic soil improvers to enrich the red earth and chalky soils.
Planting and lawn
Planting trees, hedges and flower beds with stakes and well-prepared planting holes, sowing a lawn or laying turf, mulching, and paths in stone, gravel or wood.
Systems planned in advance
Irrigation and lighting points are planned at the design stage, so you won't have to dig up the garden once the work is finished.

Design: frequently asked questions

Message us on WhatsAppHow long does it take to create a garden?
It depends on the size, the complexity and any extra work such as paths or systems. A small private garden may take just a few days on site, while more complex projects run over several weeks. After the site visit we'll give you a realistic timeframe.
When is the best time to start?
Design can be done at any time of year. For planting, the ideal time is usually autumn, when the first rains arrive and plants have the whole winter to take root before the heat; late winter and early spring are fine too, while we avoid the height of summer. Some work can be done in advance so you're ready for the right season.
Can the project be carried out in stages?
Yes. We often suggest starting with the structural work, such as earthworks, systems and paths, then completing the planting and finishing touches later. Having an overall design means each stage fits in with the next.
Do you also design small gardens or terraces?
Of course. Even a courtyard or terrace can become a welcoming space with the right choice of plants, pots and materials. In small spaces design matters even more, because every metre has to be put to good use.
Do you supply the plants?
Yes, we choose and source the plants from nurseries, selecting healthy specimens suited to Puglia's climate. If you already have plants, we can plant them for you.
Will the garden be hard to maintain?
We decide that together at the design stage. If you're short on time, we favour hardy, drought-tolerant Mediterranean species such as rockrose, myrtle, mastic and rosemary, along with mulching and drip irrigation, keeping the work needed during the year to a minimum.
